In March of 1915 President Wilson sent General John J. Pershing across the border on a "punitive expedition into Mexico" against the Mexican General Francisco (Pancho) Villa, who had repeatedly raided American territory and killed American citizens. Preoccupied with the war in Europe Wilson withdrew Pershing's forces in 1917.
