Brighton Supermarket Inc. which does business as Tierney's Super market at the 12 Corners in Brighton, yesterday filed for protection from creditors under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.
Raymond J. Tierney III, whose family has owned and operated the grocery store since 1906, said the move was necessary " to provide breathing space for our store as we reorganize."
Tierney's which previously did business as a Super Duper, is downsizing itself from a supermarket to a mid-sized grocery store. It has reduced its size by about 50 percent and will share space in the Commons with Shelter Goods.
