A summary of this 1870 Census says James & Mary Tierney were born & married in Ireland, & had 2 children born in Ireland, Ann or Anna & Edward, then came to America in 1849 , for Patrick was born in New York State in 1851.........this all agrees with James J. Tierney first appearing in Rochester Directory in 1853. With NO Record of James or a Tierney before 1853...in the Rochester Directory.
But this does not agree with Obiturary which states that James J. Tierney came to Rochester when he was 16 years old......SOoooooooooo?

Why The Irish left Ireland: Note found “on Line”

THE POTATO FAMINE: "Phytophthora Infestans" 1845-46
There had been partial crop failures each year for ten years. Emmigration started in earnest after the winter of '46 killed tens of thousands. Even though the people were starving, Ireland exported more food than it imported.
In the decade following 1845, two million people emmigrated to the U.S. and Australia, and three quarters of a million to Britain. By 19OO, four million had left the Emerald Isle and half of the Irish now lived outside Ireland.
Only one person in ten were left that could still speak the Gaelic language. In 1847, 84 disease ridden ships were held in quarantine for weeks below Quebec.
Ten thousand Irish people died on these ships. Three thousand of them were never identified.

Baptisms of Catholics were held within a day or two of birth, or even on the same day, at times. Up to the mid 19th century, more than one name was rare, with the exception of Maryanne, or Annamaria, which were considered a single name.

The Nursery where James Senior worked was Listed as Charles Moulson...
in 1861 The Rochester Directory says' James was a Foreman @ Charles Moulson Nursery........but when you find the Advertizement in the Directory in 1861 it reads as follows:
"Samuel Moulson of Old Rochester Nuseries has over 200 Acres of every description of hardy trees, shrubs & plants suitable for utility or ornament.
......................Especial attention paid to all orders by Mail or otherwise"
_______________
Ellwanger & Barry's Mount Hope Nursery, occupying 500 acres, is probably the most extensive nursery in the world. Samuel Moulson's Old Rochester Nursery occupies 350 acres; Alonzo Frost & Co.'s Genesee Valley Nursery , about 250; and Hooker & Bissell's East Avenue Nursery, about 200. J. O. Bloss & Co., Chas. Moulson, ---- Burtis, Mattison & Co., Wm. King, and Wm. Bryan & Co.'s nurseries occupy 50 to 100 acres each.

Samuel Moulson lived @ North Clinton ( City Line )
but James Tierney was listed as working @ a Nursery on Union Street near the Rail Road.......So where were the Moulson Family Nurseries ?????
I believe the Charles Moulson Nursery where James worked was @ the location of the present Public Market.

"The First commercial nursery in the area was Rowe's Monroe Garden Nursery in 1833. East Avenue first known as Main Street, was the site for many years of a large number of nurseries and seed gardens. As nurserymen acquired more land outside the city and as the city expanded some of the old tracts werew divided intto streets.".....Rochester Museum Service Magazine Vol 32 #6 June/ Aug. 1959, page 93-95

Irish Names: O'Tierney,
Families of the O'Tierney name in Ireland have been traditionally identified with County Mayo there. Here they are found in older records as the Lords of the barony of Carra. In O'Harts work, which is not always reliable, O'Tierney and O'Kieran are identified as chiefs of Fermanagh in Tir Owen, in the 12th century.
The "O" prefix before the name was generally dropped fairly early in Irish hstory. One can find the name of MacTierney, which could be the result of family members adding the wrong prefix to the name, or that the spelling could actually come from the original name of Mac Tiernon, a seperate family altogether.
O'Dugan found the O'Tierneys as chiefs of Moy Ith anciently, and their territory included the baronies of Raphoe and Tirkeeran in County Derry. The name has also been found in older records in Donegal and Westmeath.
In the census of 1659 "Tierny" was a principal name of Tipperary, and "Tierney" was given in Dublin, Tipperary and Galway in the 1890 birth index.
