I am still trying to figure out where the McDonald's came from, Canada?, Malone ? or Worcester ?
The Question is where & how did Simon Dodd & Mary Ann McDonald meet ?

The 1860 City Directory for Worcester Mass. listed 10 McDonnald's, three of which were named John, I was looking @ McDonalds in Malone NY but have found nothing to date, then when I found the reference to Worcester Catholic Library & Debating Society with John McDonald: President
and S. Dodd: Librarian, I guessed (wrongly) that this John was May Ann's brother, but this must or could be her father....and maybe the McDonalds were living in Worcester in 1860. So I need to review the 1860 US Census.

John Curtin in a letter to Leo..... July 1, 1997 stated:
"You mentioned that Mary Ann McDonnell ( sometimes spelled MacDonald etc.) was born in Malone. There are some census records that indicate that she was born in Canada West. Do you have her death certificate or other data? I have some more on her family which I will dig up.""

In the 1880 Marcellus Census, Mary Ann's brother, John 29, is living with them and he spells his
name "McDonald" but the Catholic Church in Marcellus, St. Francis, has records of "McDonnell"
The 1894 Corpus Christi Baptism Record for Agustine Dodd..names mother as Maria McDonnell
The Death Certificate tells us that she was both a McDonald by her father & a McDonnell by her Mother..........rather unique I'd say.....
Leo J. Dodds' Certificate of Baptism, written Feb. 14, 1952......listed Leo as the child of Simon Dodd & Mary McDonnell....from St. Francis Xavier Church in Marcellus NY

John & Jane McDonald, both born in Canada with children of Mary Ann born in NY November 21, 1851 & son John Jr. born in 1853. other children unknown.

Also a Family: of John 37, & Catherine 34, McDonald, both born in Scotland with children Elizabeth 10, & Anna 8, both born in Canada, Isabel 3, born NY & Sarah 1, born in Vermont.

Also a Family: of John 48, & Catherine 44, McDonald, both born in Scotland with children Anna 16, born in Canada, Bella 13 & Sarah 1, both born in NY.

Where did Simon & Mary Ann meet...in Worcester, Malone or Marcellus or ???
Note: ..........The New York Central Railroad ran directly from Utica to Malone
So I think the McDonalds moved from Malone to Marcelus by rail to work in Wollen Mill @ Marcellus,
now they may have stopped in New Hartford, Utica or Rome on the way to Marcellus, but I don't think the family went east to Worcester.: so look in these New York areas for the surname of McDonald.....note September 28, 1998.
The only possibility of a "Mary McDonald" I found in searching the Marcellus Census was in the 1870 Census, as follows;
McDonald, Mary, age 18, Female, White, Occupation: Domestic Servant, born in Canada.
is this our Mary Ann?.....is born in Canada correct...?
I need to check the 1875 NYS Census: for there were 2 Mary McDonald's in this Census in Marcellus. This would be 3 years befor Mary & Simon were married.

Second Family: of Martin 65, Catherine 63 & Thomas 20. = 3
+ A John McDonald 24, a Blacksmith born NYS, parents born Ireland =1
+ A John McDonald 27, Mart Ann's brother, living with Simon & Mary Ann Dodd =1
So I don't find a McDonald Family which could be associated with Mary Ann & John.

The "S. Dodd" must have been Simon Sr. with his Irish friend...John McDonald .
for Simon Dodd Jr. would only have been, 1862-1839 = 23 old & he would later marry Mary Ann McDonald who had a brother John McDonald Jr. but he would have been only 9 years old in 1862.
So this may have been John's father or a different McDonald family.
But regardles of the McDonald connection, this is GREAT NEWS:

The 1880 U.S. Census found in the Marcellus Library said Simon Dodd was 40 years old working in a Woolen Factory, his wife Mary Ann McDonald was 29 years old, her brother John was living with them, his age was 27 and he was working as a Laborer in Marcellus, also Gertrude Dodd, the daughter of Simon & Mary, she was 1 year old, was living with them.
Also living with the Dodds was an 18 year old Irish Servant named Annie Mulroy........was she related to the Dodds ? her Father & Mother were born in Ireland. ..Did she stay in Marcellus?

The Dodd family home in Marcellus, New York was on the corner of Orange & Maple Streets. This property was sold to the Epscopal Church...the house was then divided in two, with half now on Main Street & the other on the corner of North & Reed Parkway. The...Upper Crown Mill.....is where our family of weavers worked. It was closed before I was born (1949), and torn down in 5 to 10 years ago. It was a massive Structure. As kids we skated on the Mill Pond & took short cuts home from school over the "foot-bridge" that crossed the waterfall that powered it. The water was from Nine Mile Creek....which runs into Onondaga Lake near Syracuse

Simon moved from Marcellus, N.Y. to Rochester N.Y. in 1892. He lived @ 22 Weld Street and worked in a Saloon. In 1893 to 1895 he got a job as a weaver, from 1896 till 1899 he worked as a Watchman, and from 1900 till1913 as an Elevator Operator...he was then 73 years old, living @ 207 Bronson Avenue.

"The Choir"......"About the time that the building of the church of St. Francis Xavier was completed (1873) two brothers, Simon & James Dodd, came from Worcester, Massachusetts to work in the woolen mills. Simon had an excellent bass voice and had been sent to Boston by Father Byrd, the pastor of St. John's Church in Worcester, to study church music.On his return he trained the choir in Worcester. Father McDonough enlisted the services of Mr. Dodd in organizing a choir for St. Francis Xavier."............page 50

"In 1879 Sarah Murphy, Mr Dodd's niece became organist. Sarah had studied with Professor Renaud in Syracuse New York. Later she married John Curtin & went to Rochester, N.Y. to live. She became the mother of a daughter Anna who was known to Marcellians as Mrs. William Kirchhof Sr. At a later date Mrs. Curtin who had been widowed married Joseph Krauss & returned to Marcellus. resumed her position as organist, followed by her daughter Mrs. Kirchoff till 1920 retirement.

The "S. Dodd" must have been Simon Sr. with his Irish friend...John McDonald .
for Simon Dodd Jr. would only have been, 1862-1839 = 23 old & he would later marry Mary Ann McDonald who had a brother John McDonald Jr. but he would have been only 9 years old in 1862.
So this may have been John's father or a different McDonald family.
But regardles of the McDonald connection, this is GREAT NEWS:

The 1880 U.S. Census found in the Marcellus Library said Simon Dodd was 40 years old working in a Woolen Factory, his wife Mary Ann McDonald was 29 years old, her brother John was living with them, his age was 27 and he was working as a Laborer in Marcellus, also Gertrude Dodd, the daughter of Simon & Mary, she was 1 year old, was living with them.
Also living with the Dodds was an 18 year old Irish Servant named Annie Mulroy........was she related to the Dodds ? her Father & Mother were born in Ireland. ..Did she stay in Marcellus?

The Dodd family home in Marcellus, New York was on the corner of Orange & Maple Streets. This property was sold to the Epscopal Church...the house was then divided in two, with half now on Main Street & the other on the corner of North & Reed Parkway. The...Upper Crown Mill.....is where our family of weavers worked. It was closed before I was born (1949), and torn down in 5 to 10 years ago. It was a massive Structure. As kids we skated on the Mill Pond & took short cuts home from school over the "foot-bridge" that crossed the waterfall that powered it. The water was from Nine Mile Creek....which runs into Onondaga Lake near Syracuse

Simon moved from Marcellus, N.Y. to Rochester N.Y. in 1892. He lived @ 22 Weld Street and worked in a Saloon. In 1893 to 1895 he got a job as a weaver, from 1896 till 1899 he worked as a Watchman, and from 1900 till1913 as an Elevator Operator...he was then 73 years old, living @ 207 Bronson Avenue.

"The Choir"......"About the time that the building of the church of St. Francis Xavier was completed (1873) two brothers, Simon & James Dodd, came from Worcester, Massachusetts to work in the woolen mills. Simon had an excellent bass voice and had been sent to Boston by Father Byrd, the pastor of St. John's Church in Worcester, to study church music.On his return he trained the choir in Worcester. Father McDonough enlisted the services of Mr. Dodd in organizing a choir for St. Francis Xavier."............page 50

"In 1879 Sarah Murphy, Mr Dodd's niece became organist. Sarah had studied with Professor Renaud in Syracuse New York. Later she married John Curtin & went to Rochester, N.Y. to live. She became the mother of a daughter Anna who was known to Marcellians as Mrs. William Kirchhof Sr. At a later date Mrs. Curtin who had been widowed married Joseph Krauss & returned to Marcellus. resumed her position as organist, followed by her daughter Mrs. Kirchoff till 1920 retirement.
